Ingredients
For the Fruit Filling
5 cupspeeled, cored, and sliced apples (use a tart apple like granny smith)
5cupspeeled, cored and sliced pears
1cupwhite granulated sugar
1/3cupbrown sugar
2tablespoonsflour
1 teaspoonground cinnamon
1/8teaspoonground nutmeg
1/4cupwater
For the Crumble Topping
1cupquick-cooking oats
1cupall-purpose flour
1cuppacked brown sugar
1/4 teaspoonbaking powder
1/4teaspoonbaking soda
1/2cupbutter (1 stick)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9- x 9-inch baking dish; set aside.
Toss the cut apples and pears together in a large bowl; set aside.
In a medium bowl, combine the white sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour over the apples and pears and stir together until the fruit is well coated. Put fruit mixture into prepared baking dish. Alternatively, the fruit can be divided between 8 smaller single-serving dishes.
Pour 1/4 water evenly over fruit mixture. If using individual-size serving dishes, divide the water between the dishes.
In a medium mixing bowl, mix together the oats, flour, 1 cup packed brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda. Pour the melted butter over the dry ingredients and toss together. The mixture should be crumbly. Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apple-pear mixture.
Bake for about 45 minutes. If the top is browning too much, lay a piece of aluminum foil on top of the crumb topping. DO NOT fold it around the edges of the baking dish; the moisture from the baking process will cause the crumb topping to become soggy. Remove from oven and place on a wire wrack to cool a bit before eating. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
This can be baked in a 9" x 13" dish also. However, there will be less fruit per bite in the larger dish.
